Meatless Monday: Trader Joe’s Gorditas
The samples strike again at Trader Joe’s! This time we tried the new Trader Joe’s Gorditas. These are, as the box notes, pouches of corn masa filled with beans, cheese and chilies. For the sample they were heated up in the microwave and served on a plate with some salsa.
YUM! They were really good
They reminded us of one of our favorite foods: Pupusas! These are yummy little disks, resembling a stuffed corn tortilla. Pupusas are originally from El Salvador. We just love them! We have had them stuffed with all kinds of fillings from Chorizo to beans to cheese- or a mixture of everything.
After contemplating returning for a second sample…hehehe.. we bought a package instead and thought YES! these would be a great Meatless Monday type dinner. .
The directions said to heat in a microwave or in a pan on the stove…. Of course I only read that after I stuck two of them on a foil –lined pan and tossed them in the oven! This was because I wanted some time to make tangy coleslaw to top the Gorditas with. This is how Pupusas are served, a golden cake filled with beans and cheese and topped with a vinegary cabbage salad.
The end result? A lovely, easy dinner with rich tasty Trader Joe’s Gorditas and tangy crunchy coleslaw.
Have you tried Trader Joe’s Gorditas yet? What did you think?
I’ve never heard of Gorditas or Pupusas. LOL. But I love the way you are so open to trying different kinds of foods. My husband would not be happy with a meatless dinner (or meal of any kind) but I’m not much of a meat eater.
The closest Trader Joe’s to my house is almost two hours away, which is unfortunate! I love TJs. Perhaps one of these days I’ll stop in when I’m traveling past one… and I’ll hope they’re serving taste test treats such as Gorditas!
Hey Deb! Before we moved to Tucson, we used to visit Trader Joe’s in different cities to spend our “down time” during conferences… It seems funny to me today but we just loved the break back then.
Have a great day- Kris
I have been keeping these in my freezer as a STAPLE for quick dinners when i just can’t muster the energy to be a chef. Because of the masa, they actually remind me of a crispy version of a ‘meatless’ tamale. I serve with roasted corn and black bean salsa and a slaw lightly dressed with joe’s AWESOME reduced fat Cilantro dressing from their salad section. yuuummmmm
That sounds so yummy… the slaw and the salsa. Cheers! Kris
I saw this at the store today and was about to buy it, but got scared by the “chilies” listed. Was it spicy? (I’m a real wimp)
I am trying these for the first time and these are soooo delicious! I hbe already told 3 people about them and I haven’t even finished my first one! Love them!
I am eating these Gorditas right now and am pleasantly surprised. Like a Pupusa but lighter. Easy to eat (don’t need a knife like I do with Pupusas) not spicy, and thoroughly enjoyable. I brought these for my lunch today at work and just popped them in the toaster. Can’t wait to introduce these tasty Gorditas to my children.
Yes- we agree- these make the best quick and easy lunch items for work! Cheers! Kristin & Delaina
I bought these today and they were fantastic
I put them in toaster, two cycles per instructions, as I like them crispy
I spread some trader joes chipotle salsa on them, then sliced an avocado and put that on top
So delicious
Sounds awesome!
Thank you for reading,
Delaina & Kristin
I thought they were awful! I took them back.
Good to know, sorry you did not like them though. At least that is a good thing about Trader Joe’s you can take things back you don’t like.
Trader Joe’s Gorditas are so good, why did they get discontinued? Since you no longer make these, can you please share the receipe? Or bring them back.
thanks
Hi … I loved these Gorditas as well! As we are just a fan page, you will have to go to the official Trader Joe’s website to make a recipe request. Good Luck! Kristin
